Program Description:

Conflict, Peace, and Transition in Northern Ireland

Students will critically examine the work of justice, reconciliation, and repair while living in the city of Derry-Londonderry. While in Northern Ireland, students will study the historic and cultural roots of identity-based conflict, and will complete an immersive internship within an organization, lasting seven weeks of the program, coupled with an internship seminar. Internships will allow students to be actively involved in the ongoing work of peace building and community development in the region.

Courses & Internships
All students will take the following four courses, completing 16 Augsburg University credits during the semester:
  • Understanding the Politics of the Northern Ireland Conflict (INS 317), 4 credits
  • Building a Sustainable Democracy (INS 316), 4 credits
  • Integration Seminar- Internship Theory and Practice (INS 387), 4 credits
  • Internship Placement (INS 399/(or additional departments available), 4 credits
 
AUCGEE Derry
Student Life
Live at Ulster University’s Magee Campus in the town of Derry-Londonderry. The second largest city in Northern Ireland, Derry-Londonderry is a vibrant town with plenty to do and see! Many restaurants, shops, and cafes are walkable for visitors. Students enjoy the old-world charm of the city with its 400-year old walls and cultural significance in the region. 
 
During the program, students will begin their seven-week-long internship placements, supported by weekly seminars, in week four. The final two weeks of the program offer time for reflection and the completion of independent research projects. Excursions to the north coast of Northern Ireland, Belfast and border area between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are also included.
