New York Arts Program
Sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan University

Overview – For Undergraduate & Post Baccalaureates

Founded in 1967,  NYAP is the premiere off-campus domestic program specializing in providing students with opportunities in the arts and creative industries. Deeply connected to its location in a global cultural capital the NYAP semester advances students’ creative and critical skills, and helps them define and launch on a professional path through:
 
- Internships
- Seminars that use NYC as an active resource
- Professional Development Workshops
- Program Individual advising
- Community & Events
- And an independent urban living experience in New York City

Undergraduates receive academic credit transcripted by Ohio Wesleyan University for Internships, Seminars and Independent Projects.

In addition, NYAP offers a Summer Visual Arts Intensive that explores NYC’s diverse art world through fieldwork, seminars and workshops. Go to www.summervisualarts.org; to view an SVAI sample schedule.

NYAP was founded by the Great Lakes College Association in 1967 and is managed by Ohio Wesleyan University.

INTERNSHIPS
Students work approximately 20-30 hours a week for a company, institution, or individual creative practitioner structured by a learning goals agreement.    

SEMINARS
Faculty seminars are organized around specific disciplines but encourage all students to bring their perspectives and interests to the discussion, and explore interdisciplinary connections – creative and practical. Faculty seminars often include site visits to artists’ studios, performances, museums and forums. Students may also attend seminars of other faculty advisors.  The seminars also introduce students to a range of artists and art organizations through site visits, performances and guest speakers.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Through NYAP’s educational partnership with Creative, Capital students participate in professional-level workshops on strategic planning and financial literacy.  Creative Capital is a national foundation that supports individual artists with grants and advising to help them develop and sustain their creative practices.  Workshops with NYAP students focus on skills designed to help students develop plans to achieve their professional and creative goals.

NYAP 490   Tutorial / Independent Study:  .25 OWU units of credit (~  1 semester hour)

JOURNALS & INDEPENDENT STUDIES
Students are required to keep a journal that records and reflects a critical engagement with your experience as you work towards your goals. (Writing Requirements) During the second half of the semester, students propose and pursue a clearly defined independent study project that relates to the over-arching goals of their New York semester.   

LIVING AND LEARNING IN NEW YORK
NYAP’s Chelsea brownstone offers students a secure residential community. Students also have the option to seek their own housing. Through their work, seminars and social interaction students learn how to navigate the city’s streets and its wealth of cultural opportunities, including the opportunity to meet people from all over the country and all over the world. Their access to the mixture of cultures, ethnicities, economic circumstances, and the variety of creative endeavors— from the traditional to the groundbreaking inspires new ideas and perspectives on work, education and choices.
