ASE Summer School

ASE Summer

Program Overview

The ASE Summer School offers students the opportunity to undertake a five week five-week study for credit in the world-heritage city of Bath, England.

There are two options available, Main Summer School and Theatre Summer School.

Main Summer School

The main Summer School comprises two courses. The first is a Seminar Course taught by a professor from one of ASE's US Affiliate Institutions; the second is a Core Course taught by British faculty. Seminar Courses vary from one summer to the next; the Core Courses are Bath, Britain and the Black Atlantic, which explores the involvement of Bath and Bristol in the trade of enslaved Africans and the writings of some of those most profoundly touched by it, Jane Austen in Bath, examining those novels by Jane Austen which make significant use of Bath, and a history and archaeology class, The Romans in Britain.

Theatre Summer School

Students with a passionate interest in theatre and performance can choose to enrol for ASE’s Theatre Summer School, where they learn, rehearse and perform alongside both British and American students.

The Theatre School runs alongside our main Summer School and all students share historic housing and use of ASE’s Study Centre. They can also attend whole programme events, including day trips to Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Oxford.

Housing

ASE students live in handsome town houses and flats (apartments) throughout the centre of Bath. Each residence has its own characteristics: for example, proximity to the architectural splendours of the Royal Crescent and the Circus for the Northampton Street and Catharine Place residences, or Pulteney Brige and Great Pulteney Street for St John's Road; historic connections with one of Bath's most famous families in Linley House; views of the River Avon for the residents of Nunes House; or a pleasant kitchen-cum-dining room and sunny patio at Prior Park Road. Residences are carefully located in interesting, well-resourced neighbourhoods and are all within walking distance of the Study Centre.

All offer WiFi, TV and radio, laundry facilities, phone access, communal areas and bathrooms and kitchens of various shapes and sizes. Students receive an orientation of their new home by a member of the ASE staff on arrival day.
