In order to advance mutual understanding of the study of education, the Scholars in Residence appointments allow Educational Studies students at Denison to work with faculty and teacher educators representing one of the most highly regarded educational systems in the world. During the semester in Finland, Denison students apprentice as English Language Assistants at Turun normaalikoulu, the Teacher Training School of Turku University, and take courses at Turun yliopisto, University of Turku.

Program Requirements
Denison students must be declared Educational Studies majors or minors who have completed EDUC 249 or EDUC 250, and have a minimum grade point average (cumulative and in Educational Studies) of 3.0. Command of a second language and experience working with children or youth of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in an educational capacity outside of schools provide additional evidence of a strong candidate.

The Scholars in Residence will be assigned a supervisor/mentor teacher who is responsible for drafting a schedule and placing them in bilingual or foreign language classes in the Teacher Training School and/or International School. The language assistants will participate in the classroom activities, support the teacher, and engage pupils according to instructions.
Scholars in Residence will receive 8 credits on a pass/fail basis for the assistantship. In addition, they should plan to take 2 courses in the Department of Education, Master’s Degree Program in Learning, Learning Environment, and Educational Systems. The courses may be selected from two areas: Advanced Studies in Education and Elective Studies.
Advanced Studies in Education include:
- Philosophical Inquiry of Issues in Education
- Methodology
- Data Analysis
- Learning, Motivation and Regulation in Social and Cultural Contexts
- Aspects of Sociology and Politics of Education
- Educational Equality and Justice
Elective Studies include:
- Education System in Finnish Society
- Learning Difficulties in Academic Settings
- Educational Leadership, Management and Administration
- Research Practicum
- Workplace Learning
- Comparative and International Education
- Methodology
- Cultural Responsiveness, Diversity, and Inclusiveness
Scholars in Residence are also required to take “Finnish for Foreigners: Survival Course for Exchange Students,” at the University of Turku as well as two 0.5 credit courses at Denison: “Beyond the Hill,” and “Home to the Hill.”
Credits earned through this program may be applied to fulfill requirements of the Educational Studies major or minor, with the approval of the Department of Education at Denison. Denison students can expect to transfer up to 15 credits for their semester of study in Finland.
